There is a large pocket to protect your laptop inside the bag. There are also two smaller pockets at each end and a fourth small pocket to contain your phone, some business cards or a deck of cards. (Firemen often carry a pack of cards with them). The length of the strap is adjustable.

Made from fire hoses

Messenger bag is made of two different kind of up-cycled fire hoses – gray and red, whereas the red one is thicker than the gray one. The inside of the gray fire hose has been used to get the black color on the messenger bag.

Like our other bags this Tote bag is made of upcycled fire hoses. If we wouldn’t turn this very durable material into bags, it would be burnt (ironic, huh?) or taken into a landfill.

New life to fire hoses

Laptop bag is made of three different kinds of up-cycled fire hoses – light gray, dark gray and red. Some might have serial numbers, some might have notes and marks from the days of duty on them – and each one has a story.

We make the laptop bag in 3 sizes: for 14″, 15″ and 17″. The 14″ one also perfectly accommodates 13″ computers like a Macbook Pro.

Phone sleeve, as any other HoseWear bag is made of up-cycled fire hoses. The red fire hose is a bit thicker and the gray one has a canvas look on it, but they  both keep your phone safe from rain and softens the landing, in case you drop it.

For the clutch bag, we have used a white fire hose, which has two black stripes on it. However you can’t see the white color anywhere because it’s the inside of that up-cycled fire hose, that is shining on the mini bag

Anyway, we’ve solved our production challenges and have started to ship bags to our first customers. This bit of information may or may not be useful for you. In fact, we’re almost sure it isn’t. And yet, for some reason, we feel good about sharing it. You can only improve what you’ve already started, and now we’ve started posting on this blog. So we hope to see you again and promise that next posts will better.

Athletic bag: a soft, roomy bag used to carry sporting equipment and apparel.

Backpack: a bag that lies across the back and is supported by wearer’s shoulders with double handles. You can wear it on one or both shoulders.

Baguette Bag: a rectangular bag that reminds a baguette in shape (doh!). It is long from side to side and small from top to bottom.

Bowling Bag: just like the name suggests, it’s a bag that was originally intended for holding a bowling ball, and which later became a fashion item. The one on the photo is by GG2g, an eco-friendly maker.

Bucket bag: a bag shaped like a bucket, usually has an open top and a shoulder strap.

Clutch Bag: a small but long evening bag without a handle. May feature jewels, crystals, etc. The one on the photo is made of up-cycled fire hose, get yours here.

Duffel Bag: A large bag usually used for travel or sports. The name comes from Duffel, a town in Belgium where the fabric used to make the bag originated. Duffel bags are sometimes called sea bags due to their popularity among sailors.

Envelope bag: a flat, square or rectangular bag with a triangle-shaped top flap that folds over like an envelope.

Fold over clutch: a clutch with or without a handle that can be tucked or folded.

Hobo Bag: a roomy crescent-shaped, or just large, shoulder bag with a main compartment closure. See our hobo bag.

Laptop bag: like the name suggests this is a bag meant for carrying a laptop computer. Good laptop bags have a separate compartment for a charger, like ours does.

Messenger Bag: a roomy bag with a long strap that lies across the body, winds around the chest and rests the bag on the lower back. Usually made of high quality, durable and water-resistant materials. We make messenger bags out of up-cycled fire hoses, check them out.

Minaudiere: A small ornamental case for a woman’s cosmetics, jewelry, or personal items that is often carried as a handbag.

Satchel: a handbag with a wide, flat bottom and double handles. Satchel can be large or small.

Shoulder bag: a bag of any size and shape that comes with a shoulder strap. This example available on Ecoist.

Sling Bag: a small bag with a long strap, similar to a messenger bag but much smaller.

Tote Bag: a large bag with two handles, often used for shopping. This one by GG2g.

Wristlet: a clutch shaped bag that comes with a leather or bracelet-looking strap allowing you to use your hands freely. This one from Ecoist.

Up-cycled firehose in action

Like our outher products, the iPad sleeve is made of up-cycled firehose. It’s available in red, white and yellow. The red firehose has had a particularly interesting life, so the sleeves look a bit rougher, while the white and yellow ones look more respectable, for lack of a better word. What’s for sure is that no-one else has an iPad sleeve that looks exactly the same, and never will.

Here are some of favourite messenger bags that look great and are kind to environment.

Freitag is a pioneer in up-cycled gear. It started to make messenger bags out of used truck tarps already back in 1993 – and they’ve managed to keep the concept fresh through all these years.

727 Sailbags makes messenger bags, you guessed it, from recycled sails. You can choose from of the many designs available, or order a personalised bag.

Green Guru makes bags out recycled bicycle inner tubes. If you like your accessories colourful, then perhaps not for you, but one has to admin they’ve managed to make bike tube look pretty sexy.

Alchemy Goods is another brand that uses recycled bike tubes, and the bright green stripe adds some playfulness.

GorillaSacks uses advertising billboards as the material for their messenger bags.

And finally, we’re very proud of our own upcycled messenger bags, too. You can make some pretty darn stylish bags out of written-off firehose that would otherwise be burnt or sent to a landfill.

The size of the the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is estimated to be between 700,000 square kilometres (270,000 sq mi) to more than 15,000,000 square kilometres (5,800,000 sq mi) – or up to 8% of the size of the Pacific Ocean. So the question is not whether to buy recycled products or not, but which one to buy.

Made of fire hoses

This shoulder bag is made of yellow fire hose, which is usually used to put out fires in cities. It weights a lot less than, for example, fire hoses, that are used to put out forest fires.
